Guy Edward Riney, 87, of Owensboro passed away Monday, June 29, 2020 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born in Daviess County on May 22, 1933 to the late John Carl, Sr. and Ellen Wathen Riney. Guy was in the 1951 graduating class of St. Alphonsus Catholic School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, before going on to work for the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a Quality Control Analyst for 33 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Guy was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, and enjoyed golfing and travel, especially to Florida and California.

Along with his parents, Guy is preceded in death by the mother of his children, Dora Westerfield; his brothers, Bill and Carl; and his grandson, Nicholas Riney.

Guy is survived by his children, Karla Riney and Julie (Matthew) Riney Howell; his grandchildren, Laney and Jacob Howell; his sister, Ann Harris; his companion, Joyce Gower and her family; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1:00 pm Friday, July 3, 2020 at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory, with Father Jerry Riney officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky; 3419 Wathen’s Crossing; Owensboro, Kentucky 42301. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

  5. Karen and I are so sad to know the world has lost Uncle Guy. He was a lovely man who was so kind and loving caring for his family and friends. I’m was fortunate to share his love of golf and wished I had the opportunity to play with him more often. We will miss him.

    and certainly will be missed at the Riney gatherings

  10. I’m sorry to hear of Guy’s passing. My sympathies and prayers to his family. I worked in the same office with Guy years ago. Played golf with him several times. He was a really good man and pleasant to be around. Guy was an “even keel” and had a great sense of humor. I’ll miss seeing him on the course, and know he’ll be missed by family and friends.

  11. So sorry to hear of Guy’s passing. I really enjoyed all of our times at the golf course. He would tell me stories of the Riney family. My Mom is Sidney Riney Ebelhar and between the two of them there were many great stories. I will miss him and know you do to. God bless you and we know he’s up there praying for you.

  12. I am so sorry to hear about Guy’s passing. I worked with him many years with the state. He never met a stranger, loved his family and had such a good outlook. After retirement he loved those golf games. He will be greatly missed.

  15. Lori and I will miss Uncle Guy. I loved talking to him about UK basketball and getting his Ky Derby preview 🙂 We had a great visit in April of 2012 when he came out to Tucson for some golf. We will miss his laugh and smile!
