November 27, 1953 ~ July 10, 2021
David Craig Carter was born November 27, 1953 to John Carter and Glenna (Potts) Carter in Vincennes, Indiana.
He was a 1972 graduate of Lincoln High School where he lettered in football and baseball. He went on to Western Kentucky University where he played baseball for two years before turning his full attention to football. Upon graduation, David was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the sixth round of the 1977 NFL Draft. He played nine seasons in professional football, mostly with the Oilers, before finishing his career with the New Orleans Saints. He was inducted into the WKU Hall of Fame in 1996 and was named to the school’s All Century Football Team in 2018. He was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football of Fame in 2019.
After his football career, he began a career in telecommunications sales. If David were to excel at anything off the gridiron, it was building relationships and making people laugh, the perfect combination for a salesman.
David is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Beth (Minderman), sons Brett (Jason) of Austin, Clay (Danielle) of New Orleans, and Tyler (Kristen) of Houston, his sister, Darla Plahn (Bill) of Newburgh, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews. David’s greatest joy was his grandson, Owen, of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He loved watching and playing sports – football, baseball, golf, hunting and fishing, and like all Houstonians had a love/hate relationship with the Astros, Texans, and Rockets. David also never missed a Navy football game on Saturday. Beat Army.
David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend to many.
A visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on July 30th at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home in Vincennes, 524 Broadway St.
